A writ against a defendant (whether an individual or a cor- poration) who lays claim to something he has no right to; so named because the offender is called upon to sh9W quo warranto (rerri) usurpavit (by what right or authority he lays claim to the matter of dispute.
quockerwodger
A wooden toy figure which, when pulled by a string, jerks its limbs about. The term is used in a slang sense, to signify a pseudo-politician, one whose strings of action are pulled by somebody else.

Newgate, or any other prison. The dab's in quod; the poor rogue is in prison.

A prison, a lock-up; QUODDED, put in prison. QUOD is really a shortening of quadrangle; so to be QUODDED is to be within four walls. The expression is, however, seldom used now except to mean in prison. At Oxford, where it is spelt QUAD, the word has its original signification.

A contraction, or corruption rather, of the Latin law phrase, QUO JURE? by what law?—Legal.
quos ego
A threat of punishment for disobedience. The words, from Virgil's /Eneid (1,135), were uttered by Neptune to the disobedient and rebellious winds, and are sometimes given as an example of aposiopesis, i.e. a stopping short for rhetorical effort, "Whom I — ," said Neptune, the "will punish" being left to the imagination.
