Lesson 9 · Heavy diphthongs, triphthongs & reading full syllables
The last pieces: the three diphthongs that change spelling with position, the o/u on-glides, the triphthongs — then the formula that assembles everything from Lessons 4–8 so you can read ANY Vietnamese syllable.
Accent:
⚓ The three shape-shifting diphthongs
All three start on one vowel and settle toward a faint uh. The golden rule: NO final consonant → spelled ia, ưa, ua. WITH a final → spelled iê, ươ, uô. Same sound, two outfits.
ia ⇄ iê
“ee-uh”: kia, chia, mía → add a final and it becomes tiền, tiếng
ưa ⇄ ươ
“uh-uh” starting on ư (Lesson 4’s smile vowel): chưa, dưa, vừa → nước, sương
ua ⇄ uô
“oo-uh”: mua → muốn
One elegant exception: after the u on-glide, or at the start of a word, iê wears a third outfit — YÊ: yêu, khuyên, chuyện.
🚪 The on-glides: gliding INTO the vowel
Lesson 8 glided OUT of the vowel; here a quick “w” glides IN before it. Spelling: o before a/e (hoa, khỏe), u before ê/y (thuê, tùy) — and after q it is always u (Lesson 5).
🌀 Triphthongs: glide in AND out
Three vowel letters on paper, but do not panic: each is just pieces you already own, chained — read the pieces slowly, then speed up.
🧮 The full syllable formula
Every Vietnamese syllable is: (start) + (on-glide) + vowel + (ending) + tone. So “chuyện” = ch + u + yê + n + nặng tone; “người” = ng + ươ + i + huyền tone. You now own all five slots.
🎓 The graduation read
Say each word out loud FIRST, then tap to compare with the native take. Each one packs a skill from Lessons 4–9.
