Farringdon Street
Its history was as dismal as the building itself. Originally used for prisoners committed by the Star Chamber, on the abolition of that court it became a prison for debtors, bankrupts, and persons charged with contempt of court. It was in charge of a warden, who bought the job and reimbursed himself from the exorbitant fees he charged pris9ners for board, lodging, and innumerable privileges they never received.

The last landed, inned, or stowed, of any sort of merchandise: so called by the water-side porters, carmen, &c. All the fat is in the fire; that is, it is all over with us: a saying used in case of any miscarriage or disappointment in an undertaking; an allusion to overturning the frying pan into the fire. Fat, among printers, means void spaces.

The Rev. Joseph Leycester Lyne (1837-1908), a deacon of the Church of England, who founded a pseudo-Benedictine monastery at Llanthony, N. Wales. He was an eloquent preacher, but his ritualistic practices brought him into conflict with his ecclesiastical superiors. He was never ordained priest in the Anglican Church but secured an irregular ordination through a dissident priest of an •Oriental rite.

Stesichoros of Sicily (632-552 BC). Eppur si muove! (e poor se mu 6' vi) (Ital., and yet it [i.e. the earth] does move). The phrase said by a fable that dates only from 1757 to have been uttered m an undertone by Galileo immediately after his recantation of belief in the Copermcan theory of the earth, which was made before the Inquisition in 1633. It is certainly apocryphal.
